One of recently developed immortals that is a particular favorite of mine is Doctor Who. For all practical purposes the Time Lord is immortal by the means of regeneration.
Regeneration process will create a new body for the doctor although on occasion the doctor can control the creation of the new body and channel this energy toward something else. With all of the above said the Doctor physical characteristics change but the essence of the doctor remains the same. This allows the good Doctor to be already more then 900 years old, in standard Earth years.
The Doctor is a newly created character but it represents old needs and want of human kind. The immorality is one of them and I would have to say it is biggest one, the second one is ability to travel and explorer literally anything, anywhere and in anytime, the third one would be the physical difference of Time Lord and human.
The immortality and constant traveling frees the doctor of any long term obligations and allows him to truly be free. His charismatic personality and overcoffeenated presence allows him to make fast friends and build trust on the fly. These characteristics are somewhat opposite to a true English gentlemen that we are use to see.
